Jump to navigationJump to searchWilliam Shakespeare (IPA: ['wɪliəm 'ʃeɪkspɪə] (RP) or ['wɪliəm 'ʃeɪkspɪɹ] (GA)) (baptised 26 April 1564 – died 23 April 1616)[I] was an English poet and playwright. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer of the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist.[1] His surviving works include at least 38 plays (some written with collaborators)[II] and 154 sonnets, as well as a variety of other poems. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" (or simply "The Bard").
