Emily Dickinson (December 10, 1830(1830-12-10) – May 15, 1886 (aged 55)) was an American poet.

She had this to say about being a wife in the poem The Wife:

She rose to his requirement, dropped
The playthings of her life
To take the honorable work
Of woman and of wife.
